The Challenge Begins

So here we are on the eve of a brand new year. Tomorrow, it'll be 2011 and no doubt it will bring as many uplifting, heartbreaking, tragic, joyful, disastrous and ground-breaking events as 2010 graced us with. But at least this isn’t a Footie World Cup Year so the collective disappointment of a nation will have to find a different outlet.
Why am I here? Well, that’s a deeper mystery than I’ve got the strength for today. I’m starting a challenge tomorrow that I want to keep a record of in some way. It’s all about reading. I love a good book – a cliché maybe, but I really DO love a good book. This is probably why my husband bought me a Kindle for Christmas. Now, I have to admit, I was a tad lukewarm when I opened the parcel, as I have always relished the turning of a page, being able to flick ahead and gauge if I can stay awake to the end of a chapter, and the like. However, 2010 introduced me to the joys of reading audio books, which you can do while walking, ironing, cooking or your partner is watching yet another footie match on Sky. Reading an audio book is an entirely different way of interacting with the "printed word" – a completely immersive experience, but very much dependent upon the narrator. It’s so different that I have no problem reading two books at the same time – one on paper, the other via my ears. So, I have opened my mind to the possibility of reading using an electronic medium too, and have already downloaded a few titles to the Kindle.
My challenge is to read an average of one book each week during 2011 – using the three options now available to me – paper, audio and etext formats. I’m going to mix things up between contemporary and classic fiction, with a smattering of non-fiction thrown in. So, here we go – first up is ....
Paper: The Girl Who Played With Fire, by Stieg Larrson
Etext:  Fup: A Modern Fable, by Jim Dodge
Audio: The Elephant to Hollywood, by Michael Caine
Wish me luck ... or why not recommend the remaining 49 books I really should read this year?

  1. What a wonderful challenge and a great idea. I will be reading with interest .. and have a few suggestions to share with you later ;) I would naturally sign up to join you, but based on past performance, I would only be completing the Girl Who Played With Fire around Easter, so wouldn't want to hold you back! I will, however, look forward to joining you via your blog :)
